Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart is huge. It's vast. But it knows its place in the world — and it takes its responsibility seriously. In fact, Wal-Mart's many giving and volunteer programs make it among the largest philanthropic institutions in the world.

Each individual Wal-Mart store contributes locally, both employee volunteer time and money. The Wal-Mart Foundation gives at the international, national, state and local level, and also provides individual scholarships for education.

How much does Wal-Mart actually give away?  A few stats from the Wal-Mart website:

  • In the US in 2008, Wal-Mart gave more than $378 million in cash and in-kind gifts. In the same year, the mass retailer gave $45.5 abroad.
  • Contributions supported disaster relief efforts, including the China earthquake and Brazil floods.
  • Domestically and internationally, Wal-Mart's customers and associates gave more than $106 million through in-store giving programs that benefit local charities.
  • In total, Wal-Mart, its foundations, customers and associates supported global organizations with nearly $530 million in charitable contributions during FYE 2009.

But actual charitable giving is just the beginning. In addition to providing grants and donations to support all sorts of projects, and solve a wide range of problems, Wal-Mart is also actively going green.

Stores now use compact fluorescent light bulbs, and many are powered — at least in part — by sun and/or wind. A large portion of its trucks use alternative fuels. Its products are purchased, at least in part, with an eye to sustainable agriculture and production. Wal-Mart has also taken on an enormous recycling and trash reduction, promising to eliminate all landfill-bound trash by 2025.

But wait — there's more.

Wal-Mart is well known for its commitment to diversity: it's one of the world's foremost employers of individuals with disabilities, and makes a major commitment to recruiting and advancing individuals of different ethnic backgrounds. Its corporate site also states that it has over 400,000 employees aged 50 and older, and that its pharmacists are specially trained to help seniors navigate Medicare and other insurance companies' complex rules.

Although the 500-pound gorilla may have changed the world, in many ways, the world is a better place because of Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart was founded in 1962 with a single discount shop in Arkansas. Its founder, Sam Walton, took the growing retailer public in the early 1970's. And Wal-Mart grew.

How big? According to its website: "Walmart serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at more than 8,159 retail units under 55 different banners in 15 countries. With fiscal year 2009 sales of $401 billion, Walmart employs more than more than 2.1 million associates worldwide."

In addition to Wal-Mart stores, the Wal-Mart empire also includes Sam's Club discount stores.  The Wal-Mart Corporation was listed as #1 in 2009 among the most admired corporations in Fortune magazine.

Highlights

  • Wal-Mart gives away hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cash and in-kind goods around the world.
  • Wal-Mart is a world leader in employing and valuing adults with disabilities.
  • Much of Wal-Mart's philanthropy is donated within the communities where stores are located: while they think globally, they act locally.
